HC Deb 15 November 1967 vol 754 cc121-2W
90. Mr. Willey

asked the President of the Board of Trade how much space there is in Government-financed factories in Sunderland available but at present unused.

Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody

One advance factory, of 50,000 square feet, completed in July last, is at present unoccupied.

91. Mr. Willey

asked the President of the Board of Trade what steps he is taking to provide more land for factory building in Sunderland.

Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody

There is a shortage of suitable industrial sites in Sunderland. Should one become available, the Board would be prepared to consider its acquisition.

Mr. Randall

asked the President of the Board of Trade when it is expected that the two advance factories now under construction at the Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead, will be completed; what progress has been made in finding suitable firms to occupy the factories; and what are the expectations of jobs in prospect for the next four years in Gateshead.

Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody

The 25,000 square feet advance factory at Team Valley has just been completed and will be occupied by Appleyard Coachbuilders Ltd., who hope to start production in January, 1968. The second advance factory, of 50,000 square feet is expected to be completed by about the middle of 1968, and is being brought to the notice of suitable firms. Over the next four years, 1,190 jobs, including 780 for men, are expected to arise in authorised new industrial buildings and existing buildings taken over by manufacturing firms within the area covered by the Gateshead employment exchange.
