HC Deb 14 November 1967 vol 754 c68W
Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the number of Customs and Excise officers employed in connection with distilling and with brewing in Scotland; and what will be the estimated saving in staff and expenditure as a result of the present reorganisation of duties.

Mr. Harold Lever

The changes in the revenue control of spirits affect Excise Officers employed in connection with the production and warehousing of spirits. About 550 were so employed in Scotland prior to this reorganisation. The estimated eventual saving in the number of Officers is about 180, offset by an increase of about 145 in the lower grade of Watcher. The direct saving in expenditure is estimated at over £200,000 per annum.
