HC Deb 14 November 1967 vol 754 cc80-1W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware of the large number of vehicles being left on the roads unlicensed and eventually becoming derelict, that as a number of children in Newham have been burnt when playing with the petrol tanks of these derelicts the police have advised that water should be poured into the tanks to prevent fire and that many councils are now doing this; and, in view of the danger caused by these uncovered petrol tanks, if he will advise the authorities concerned to take action nationally along these lines.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

My hon. Friend has sent me a newspaper report on the subject, and I shall be writing in reply to his letter when I have completed my inquiries. He will be aware that the attention of local authorities was drawn some time ago to the need to dispose of abandoned vehicles, and that Part III of the Civic Amenities Act, 1967, will confer new powers and responsibilities on them.
