HC Deb 09 November 1967 vol 753 cc150-1W
40. Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what action he is taking to improve the prison mental services.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

Three consultants in forensic psychiatry were recently appointed in conjunction with the Leeds, Birmingham and Newcastle Regional Hospital Boards, and I hope there will soon be further similar joint appointments. I attach importance to the possession by prison medical officers of the Diploma in Psychological Medicine; they are encouraged to study for this qualification and are afforded financial and other assistance.

I am considering the need for a second psychiatric prison on the lines of Grendon.
