HC Deb 09 November 1967 vol 753 cc153-4W
Mr. John Hall

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the estimated number of persons of Asiatic origin who have entered the United Kingdom from East Africa since 1st July, 1962.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The hon. Member probably has in mind citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies resident in East Africa, and holding passports issued by the Government of the United Kingdom which exempt them from control under the Commonwealth Immigrants Act, 1962. There are no statistics of entry to this country before 1st January, 1965. From that date until 30th September, 1967, 21,365 entered. Because they were not made subject to the 1962 Act, no record is kept of the outward movements of these categories of persons. The figures do not represent the net balance of those remaining here for settlement.
