Mr. Hazell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, what composition has been determined for the Production and Distribution Committees of the Meat and Livestock Commission.

Mr. Peart

After consultations with the interests concerned, the Secretary of State for Scotland and I have decided to appoint these Committees on the following basis.

Production Committee
(a) Cattle and sheep producers 10
(b) Pig producers 5
(c) Persons employed in livestock production 3
Total 18
Distribution Committee
(a) Livestock traders 1
(b) Livestock auctioneers 3
(c) Local authorities operating slaughterhouses and livestock and meat markets 3
(d) Persons engaged in animal by products trades 1
(e) Wholesalers of meat and importers of meat (excluding bacon) 5
(f) Producers of bacon and other edible livestock products except meat 3
(g) Retailers of meat and other edible livestock products 5
(h) Persons employed in the marketing and distribution of livestock or the production, processing, manufacture, marketing and distribution of livestock products 2
Total 23

We are now consulting representative organisations about the persons to be appointed.

As provided in the Act, the Chairman of each Committee will be a member of the Commission.
