§ Mr. Haleasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will give a direction in relation to the collection of arrears of tax limiting the total amount of tax to be deducted from taxable incomes of less than £600 a year to an amount not exceeding 12½ per cent. of the gross weekly sum and so limited that no deduction is made which will reduce the income to less than £500 a year.
§ Mr. MacDermotI am afraid that I could not adopt the suggestion in my hon. Friend's Question; but it is the normal practice of the Inland Revenue to allow collection of P.A.Y.E. arrears to be spread over a reasonable period, having regard to the circumstances of the particular case. I am looking into the case which my hon. Friend has raised with me.
