HC Deb 09 May 1967 vol 746 c208W
Mr. Harry Howarth

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether the review of the practice of caning juniors in the Royal Navy has been completed; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Reynolds

Caning has been accepted for many years as one form of discipline of juniors in the Royal Navy. It has not been a subject of complaint from parents.

Nevertheless the practice has now been reviewed and it has been decided to bring the Navy into line with the other two Services in this respect. The practice of caning has therefore been abolished.
