HC Deb 09 May 1967 vol 746 cc192-3W
59. Mr. Robert Cooke

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he will seek to provide public funds for the restoration of the fabric of cathedrals and other ecclesiastical building of architectural importance.

Mr. MacColl

The Church authorities have not so far sought Exchequer help towards the cost of restoring cathedrals and other ecclesiastical buildings still used for public worship. If such a request were made, it would be most carefully considered.

As regards churches no longer used for public worship, the Government has already agreed to contribute £200,000 over a five-year period to the Redundant Churches Fund to be set up under the Pastoral Measure now under consideration.
