52. Mr. Edelman

asked the Minister of Technology (1) what steps he has taken to implement recommendation xix of the Plowden Report that the Government should arrange with the aircraft industry to carry out jointly a full examination into measures to improve efficiency in the industry;

(2) what inquiries he has made into the relative efficiency in productivity of the British aircraft industry compared with the American and the French industries.

Mr. Benn

The Ministry of Technology and the Society of British Aerospace Companies have agreed to carry out a joint inquiry into ways and means of improving the productivity of the national aircraft effort. This examination, under the chairmanship of Mr. St. John de Holt Elstub, who was a member of the Plowden Committee, is already wider way. This Committee, in the course of its deliberations, will be making comparisons of our performance with that of other countries.
