asked Her Majesty's Government:

To state the number of civil servants now employed in Government Departments compared with the number employed in October, 1964; the estimated cost of the Civil Service for the current financial year; and the cost per head to the tax-paying public of this country.

LORD SHEPHERD

There were 448,000 non-industrial civil servants in post on January 1,1967, compared with 415,000 on October 1, 1964. The estimated total of salaries and wages for staff estimated to be in post in the current financial year, is £537 million or approximately £1,165 per head. These figures exclude the Post Office.
