HC Deb 21 March 1967 vol 743 c248W
Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Postmaster-General what plans he has to ensure that post offices in Wales carry the Welsh description Llythyrdy, as well as the English Post Office.

Mr. Joseph Slater

As I explained in Answer to the hon. Member on 26th October, 1966, for Crown Offices our policy is that in predominantly Welsh-speaking areas where both languages are used on public buildings, we display the name "Post Office" in Welsh as well as English on new or reconstructed Offices, if a request is made and supported by the local authority and it is practicable to do so.

As for scale-payment offices, sub-postmasters in Welsh-speaking areas are at liberty to exhibit the name of their office in Welsh as well as English, provided that no less prominence is given to the latter.—[Vol. 734, c. 168.]
