48. Mr. J. H. Osborn

asked the Minister of Power whom he has appointed to represent the British Steel Industry, including companies who will be part of the National Steel Corporation, in discussions with the High Authority of the European Economic Community on Steel Prices.

Mr. Freeson

The Chairman of the Iron and Steel Board has been and is a member of the Council of Association representing the interests of the steel industry. The Study Group recently set un to consider problems arising from the world surplus of steelmaking capacity, including the effect on steel prices, is composed of senior officials and the industries are not directly represented.

asked the Minister of Power what information he has about the effective steel prices which operate in European Economic Community countries, as distinct from published prices; and what machinery he will employ for publishing home and overseas steel prices after vesting day.

No official information about the extent to which Community prices vary from published prices is available Responsibility for publishing the prices charged by the publicly-owned British companies will rest with the National Steel Corporation.
