HC Deb 09 March 1967 vol 742 cc348-9W
Mr. Lubbock

asked the Minister of Power if he will publish a formula giving the relationship between the cost of electricity generated in gas turbine plant. the load factor, and the cost of fuel per therm, for each type of plant used by the Central Electricity Generating Board.

Mr. Freeson

The C.E.G.B. have only one type of gas turbine plant, based on aircraft type jet engines. This plant is primarily intended for emergency and peak load operation, and it would not be appropriate to attempt to estimate costs at any other than low load factors.

Mr. Lubbock

asked the Minister of Power what is the present cost per therm of distillate fuel used in gas turbine plant by the Central Electricity Generating Board.

Mr. Freeson

The cost per therm for distillate fuel in gas turbine plant will vary with the supplier and location of the plant and is a commercial matter between the C.E.B.G. and its suppliers.

Mr. Lubbock

asked the Minister of Power what would be the cost of modifying gas turbine plant owned by the Central Electricity Generating Board to burn natural gas.

Mr. Freeson

I cannot give an accurate estimate but I understand that the cost of conversion is likely to be low compared with other factors such as the cost of supplying pipework and other equipment.

In view of the comparatively small quantity of fuel used in these gas turbines, there would be little scope for economy by using natural gas.
