HC Deb 02 March 1967 vol 742 cc129-30W
38. Dame Irene Ward

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the average annual cost per undergraduate in each university in England, Scotland and Wales.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

Information on university expenditure is not readily available in this form. The following figures of the expenditure by each university in 1964–65 divided by the total number of full-time students are derived from the Returns from Universities and University Colleges 1964–65 (Cmnd. 3106).

* The figures for the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford exclude all expenditure by the Colleges, which covers part of the cost of teaching and administration. These figures are therefore not directly comparable with those of other universities

These figures should be interpreted with caution. Those for new universities in their initial years when the number of students is building up are clearly unrepresentative. The cost per undergraduate at a particular university will depend on a number of factors including the balance of faculties and the proportion of postgraduates.
