Dame Joan Vickers

asked the Minister of Overseas Development what is the cost of keeping a Government-sponsored Commonwealth student in Great Britain.

Mr. Oram

A sample of those in this country last year under technical assistance regional programmes shows that the average cost of a student from the beginning to the end of his course and allowing for passage costs, etc. was about £2,425. This does not include the hidden subsidy represented by the uneconomic fees charged by institutions of higher education. The cost in any individual case, however, depends to a large extent on the length of course.
