Mr. Victor Yates

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give figures showing the amount of crime in England and Wales in 1966 and the comparison with 1965.

The following table gives the figures of indictable offences known to the police in England and Wales in 1965 and provisional figures for 1966, and shows the percentage variation between each of these years and the previous year:

the numbers of sales during the past 12 months in each case; and whether he will make a statement.

184 local authorities in England and Wales sold 3,766 council houses in 1966, the number sold varying from 1 to 1,138 in the case of Birmingham. Full details are not readily available, but the following authorities sold more than 50:

Most local authorities do not encourage the sale of council houses to existing tenants but individual houses are sold in the normal course of housing management.
