§ Mr. GreenwoodArrangements have been made to enable local authorities210W to lend up to £130 million for house purchase in the financial year 1967–68, which is approximately equal to their average lending over the three years ended 31st March, 1965. Out of this the Greater London Council has been authorised to advance up to £30 million and the London Borough Councils up to £21 million—a total of £51 million for London. It is not possible to increase these amounts because of the need to contain local authority lending for this purpose as part of the overall control of public expenditure.
