§ 69. Mr. Rowlandasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps are taken to inform the parents 208W or next of kin of youths below the age of 18 years when their children are remanded or convicted.
§ Mr. Roy JenkinsA person under 21 received into a prison, borstal, detention centre or remand centre is at once allowed a letter so that he may inform his next of kin, and an official notification is also sent to them when he has been convicted or sentenced.
The parents of a person under 17 received into a remand home are informed by the superintendent. In cases in the juvenile courts a parent is normally present at the hearing and learns the court's decision at first hand.
