What is the cost falling on the defence budget for 1967–68 of our Forces in each of the following bases: viz., Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, the Persian Gulf, Aden, Cyprus, Malta, Libya, Gibraltar and the other areas outside Europe in which British Forces are at present stationed.
§ LORD SHACKLETONExperience has shown that figures of budgetary expenditure for overseas areas are liable to be misinterpreted, and to be wrongly regarded as indicating the cost of meeting commitments in the areas to which they are attributed. For these reasons, it is now the practice to give foreign exchange figures only.
The estimated foreign exchange figures for the current year for the areas mentioned on the same basis as Annex H to the Statement on the Defence Estimates 1967 (Cmnd. 3203) are: Hong Kong, £11 million; Singapore and Malaysia, £74 million; Middle East, £23 million; Cyprus, £15.5 million; Malta, £12.5 million; Libya, £1.5 million; Gibraltar, £6.5 million; and other areas outside Europe, £11 million.
