HC Deb 13 July 1967 vol 750 c131W
55. Mrs. Lena Jeger

asked the Minister of Overseas Development what contribution Her Majesty's Government has pledged to the United Nations Development Decade; and if he will make a statement on progress to date.

Mr. Bottomley

Governments have not been requested to make pledges to the Development Decade. The flow of financial resources (official and private) from Britain to developing countries has exceeded 1 per cent. in every year since 1956. We have therefore complied with the target laid down by General Assembly Resolution 1710 of 1961 which established the Development Decade. United Nations figures show that the weighted average rate of growth for developing countries for which adequate statistics are available was 4.6 per cent. per annum in the period 1960 to 1965 compared with the Decade's target of a growth rate of 5 per cent. per annum by 1970.
