Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many full-time supplementary, temporary and occasional teachers were employed at maintained schools in England and Wales in 1966, or the last year for which figures are available; and what increases there have been in the number of each category over the last 10 years.

Mr. Crosland

The 1957 employment of temporary, occasional and supplementary teachers and the best estimate of the 1967 position is given in the table below. Precise figures for 1966 and 1967 will be available shortly.
