HC Deb 13 July 1967 vol 750 c121W
36. Dame Irene Ward

asked the Postmaster-General when he intends to introduce coloured television to Northumberland and Durham.

Mr. Joseph Slater

This is a matter for the B.B.C. who tell me that they expect to introduce colour on the B.B.C.2 transmissions from Pontop Pike in time for the official opening of the colour service on 2nd December.

Dr. John Dunwoody

asked the Postmaster-General what is his estimate of the number of viewers who can receive the British Broadcasting Corporation's colour television, and of the number of viewers of B.B.C.1 who live in areas where B.B.C.2 is not available.

Mr. Edward Short

The B.B.C. tells me that, at present, of the main B.B.C.2 transmitters, six with their associated relay stations are broadcasting the colour service. The population coverage attained by their transmissions is over 27 million people. Some 18 million B.B.C.1 viewers are outside the present coverage area of B.B.C.2.
