HC Deb 04 July 1967 vol 749 cc227-8W
72. Sir W. Teeling

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs, as freemasonry is held not to be a religion in Spain, what steps he will take to assure freemasons in Gibraltar that they will be allowed to continue their activities should the referendum go in favour of Spain.

Mrs. Hart

I cannot anticipate the results of the Referendum nor can I enlarge on my statement of 14th June.— [Vol. 748, c. 563–566.]

73. Sir W. Teeling

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs what steps he is taking to ensure that all Gibraltarians living in the United Kingdom will be given an opportunity to vote in the forthcoming referendum.

Mrs. Hart

Section 5 of the Gibraltar (Referendum) Order in Council, 1967, provides that one of the qualifications for voting in the referendum is to be ordinarily resident in Gibraltar. Section 6 provides that, except in so far as may other- wise be prescribed in regulations made by the Governor under the Order, no person will be entitled to vote unless he attends in person at the place and time appointed for voting.

Sir W. Teeling

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs whether, for the benefit of anyone living in Gibraltar who does not speak or read English, he will have all referendum documents printed both in Spanish and English.

Mrs. Hart

This matter will fall to be considered in connection with the detailed regulations for the referendum which are to be made by the Governor in accordance with the provisions of the Gibraltar (Referendum) Order in Council, 1967.
