HC Deb 17 January 1967 vol 739 cc33-4W
Q10. Mr. Marquand

asked the Prime Minister whether he will introduce legislation to prevent further concentration in the ownership and control of the Press; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. M. Stewart

I have been asked to reply.

My right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade already has wide powers under the Monopolies and Mergers Act, 1965, and will not hesitate to use them whenever appropriate. As to fresh legislation we should, I think, gain more information about the practical operation of this fairly new legislation before deciding whether further changes are necessary.
