asked her Majesty's Government:

  1. (1) What percentage of the total number of persons in the Civil Service are in receipt of "London weighting";
  2. (2) What is the total sum paid annually in "London weighting";
  3. (3) What relation (as a percentage) does the answer to (2) above bear to the total amount paid annually in salaries in the Civil Service.

LORD SHEPHERD

About 35 per cent, of non-industrial civil servants receive "London weighting". The total sum paid annually is approximately £17.9 million, and this is 2 per cent. of the total salaries and wages bill for the Non-Industrial Civil Service.
