In the six months July-December, 1966, the value of exports, other than those of animals for breeding, was lower than in earlier comparable periods. The general market situation on the Continent, which led to the imposition of levies by countries of the European Economic Community, was the primary cause of the reduction of cattle exports. All exports were affected to some degree by the prohibition on imports from Great Britain imposed by some Continental countries from mid-August to mid-November because of foot-and-mouth disease here. There were also residual effects of the ban on exports from the United Kingdom imposed because of the seamen's strike.
