§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Prime Minister to what extent the policy of a £100 million cut in defence expenditure decided last July has been, or is likely to be, achieved.
§ Mr. HealeyI have been asked to reply. I assume my hon. Friend is referring to the £100 million cut in foreign exchange expenditure announced by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister on 20th July, 1966. The major part of this, but not the whole, was to be in the foreign exchange cost of defence and, as the Statement on the Defence Estimates 1967 (Cmnd. 3203) makes clear, savings at a rate of about £75 million will be achieved by the end of 1967/68.
