HC Deb 16 February 1967 vol 741 cc136-7W
10. Sir Knox Cunningham

asked the Postmaster-General what steps he is taking to alleviate the hardship caused by the early closing of post offices in Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement.

32. Mr. Chichester-Clark

asked the Postmaster-General what representations he has received in regard to the earlier closing of post offices; and what reply he has sent.

38. Mr. Onslow

asked the Postmaster-General what consideration he gave, in authorising reduced hours of business on Saturdays at 900 main post offices, to the convenience of the general public.

Mr. Joseph Slater

We have had representations from hon. Members, local authorities and others, and have explained in reply that changes in hours of business are essential if we are to cope with our manpower problems and rising costs. By closing Post Offices at times when business is relatively light, we are seeking to keep to a minimum inconvenience to our customers.

I have no evidence that the changes are causing hardship in Northern Ireland; but we are in touch with the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and have promised to help, where we can, with any serious difficulties they bring to notice.
