Mr. Clifford Williamsasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many miles of coast protection schemes have been completed by the respective river authorities in Wales and Monmouthshire; if he will state the costs of such schemes; and how many more miles of coast protection schemes are required to give protection from flooding.
§ Mr. John MackieSince these river boards were set up in 1950 they have completed some 45 miles of sea defence work and a further 5½ miles are currently under construction. The cost of these works is approximately £1.75 million. It is the responsibility of these authorities to determine the nature and extent of protection required and I cannot anticipate what further schemes they may submit for grant aid.
