HC Deb 09 February 1967 vol 740 cc348-9W
Mr. Ridley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is now the total average cost of keeping a student for one year in primary school, secondary school, and higher education, respectively.

Mr. Crosland

The latest available figures, for England and Wales, relate to the financial year 1965–66 for primary and secondary schools and to 1964–65 for establishments of higher education and are as follows:—

£
Primary Schools 80
Secondary Schools 151
Colleges of Education (net cost of tuition) 311
Further Education (advanced courses) 555
Colleges of Advanced Technology 757
Universities (including postgraduates) 755

They cover all current expenditure by public authorities including loan charges but exclude capital expenditure both from revenue and from loans, cash benefits (maintenance, travelling and other allowances) and the cost of school meals and milk.
