HC Deb 02 February 1967 vol 740 cc150-1W
53. Mrs. Joyce Butler

asked the Postmaster-General if he will give a general direction on the lines of the directives which have been given to French television programme producers, particulars of which have been sent to him, that they should refrain from broadcasting over Christmas scenes of violence likely to harm children when shown during general viewing periods.

Mr. Edward Short

No. Programme content is a matter for the broadcasting authorities. Each has its own code of practice governing, particularly when children may be viewing, the portrayal of violence; and each has adopted the general rule of excluding from the earlier part of the evening programmes which might be unsuitable for children.
