HC Deb 02 February 1967 vol 740 c164W
Q17. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the changed circumstances arising from the development of the British Empire into the British Commonwealth of Nations, he will advise that the name Order of the British Empire should be changed to that of the British Commonwealth.

The Prime Minister

No. These matters have to be considered in the light of feeling not only in this country but also throughout the Commonwealth and I have no evidence of a widespread desire for a change of the kind suggested by my hon. Friend.
