Cooke asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, (1) if he will give the number of drivers who have been required to submit to a breath test under the Road Safety Act, 1967, the numbers required to go to a police station for a blood or urine test, and the numbers of such cases in which it has subsequently been discovered that the blood alcohol level was not in excess of the prescribed limit;

(2) how many drivers have been required to submit to a breath test under the Road Safety Act, 1967; how many of such drivers had been involved in an accident; how many were alleged to have committed traffic offences; and how many were suspected of having alcohol in the body.

Mr. Taverne:

From 9th to 31st October inclusive, 1,119 people in England and Wales (including 54 arrested under Section 6 of the Road Traffic Act. 1960) were required to go to a police station for a blood or urine test.
