HC Deb 14 December 1967 vol 756 cc199-200W
50. Mr. Braine

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why a 20-year-old Australian, Mr. John Lockhart Brownlie, who had committed a breach of the immigration regulations, was held in custody for 10 days without the Australian High Commissioner being notified; and what steps are now being taken to ensure that in all such cases in the future the police and immigration officers concerned automatically and without delay inform the representatives of the relevant Commonwealth Governments.

Mr. Callaghan:

Discussions with other Commonwealth Governments have been taking place about reciprocal arrangements covering such circumstances; but I understand that Mr. Brownlie, although given facilities to communicate with the Australian High Commission, preferred not seek their assistance. The High Commission were notified in the normal way after he had been recommended for deportation.
