HC Deb 12 December 1967 vol 756 cc96-7W
76. Sir J. Eden

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government to what extent rent assessment committees in making their decisions have given con- sideration to complaints by landlords that rents are inadequate to enable them to maintain their property in good condition.

Mr. MacColl

Section 27(1) of the Rent Act, 1965, requires rent assessment committees, like rent officers, to have regard in determining a fair rent to all circumstances except personal circumstances, and especially to the age, character and locality of the dwelling and its state of repair.

82. Mr. Rippon

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what guidance he has given to the chairmen of rent assessment committees or rent tribunals during the last 12 months as to the level at which rents should be fixed.

Mr. MacColl

Rent assessment committees and rent tribunals operate independently under statute and my right hon. Friend has no power to issue guidance on the levels of rent they should fix.
