Mr. Marquand

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will state the total number of postgraduate awards made by the Social Science Research Council for the current academic year, 1967–68; and if he will list in tabular form the number of awards which have been allocated to each academic discipline concerned, and to each university department concerned.

Mrs. Shirley Williams:

Five hundred and thirty-five awards were made, distributed among the disciplines as follows:

Economics 129
Education 10
Managemen 51
Psychology 51
Politics 121
Social Anthropology 39
Sociology 128
Statistics 6
The list of allocations to each university department as at 18th October, 1967, which is lengthy, has been published in the Council's Newsletter and I am sending a copy of the final list to my hon. Friend.

Mr. Marquand

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will list the total sum which has been allocated by the Social Science Research Council for research projects so far; and whether he will list the projects concerned and the sums allocated to them.

£1,217,925 has been allocated up to 16th October, 1967. Lists of the projects supported have been published in the Council's Annual Report for 1965–66, in the booklet "Research Supported by the SSRC", and in the Council's newsletter. I am sending my hon. Friend a complete list.
