Mr. Bob Brown

asked the Minister of Transport what savings have been made by the completion of the Coast Road Urban Motorway and the North-West Radial Route Urban Motorway by the direct labour force of the City Engineer's Department of Newcastle City Council; whether she is satisfied with the quality of the standards of finish and aesthetic appearance; and if she will give further support to this type of municipal enterprise.

These are both principal road schemes and are the responsibility of the highway authority. It is not possible to quantify hypothetical financial advantages particularly as one of the schemes was not put out to competitive tender.

We are satisfied with the standards of finish employed; appearance is a matter of opinion.

We are prepared to consider any procedure which promoted efficiency and economy.
