HC Deb 11 December 1967 vol 756 cc36-7W
Mr. McGuire

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is aware that British dumping of radioactive waste is poisoning the Irish Sea and north-east Atlantic and if he will put an end to this practice.

Mr. Hoy

Only low activity liquid effluents, which present no hazard to the marine environment, are discharged into the Irish Sea. The radioactivity of wastes dumped in deep waters of the Atlantic is so small in relation to the natural radioactivity of sea water that no measurable degree of contamination results. Strict conditions for such disposals are prescribed by authorisations issued by my right hon. Friend and my right hon. Friend the Minister of Housing and Local Government.
