98. Mr. Edward M. Taylor

asked the Minister of Transport who is to succeed the present Chairman of British Railways on 1st January; and what salary he will receive.

Mr. H. C. Johnson;£12,500 per annum.

Mr. Peter Walker

asked the Minister of Transport what discretion she will give to the incoming chairman of British Railways regarding the policy of the basic railway network of 11,000 miles, and the future operations of the freightliner service of British Railways.

Mrs. Castle

Mr Johnson has assured me that he is happy to work within Government policy as stated in Cmnd. 3439 and 3470 and the relevant provisions of the Transport Bill.
