HC Deb 04 December 1967 vol 755 cc242-3W
Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Minister of Transport if she will consider making mud-flaps of the kind used on lorry wheels compulsory equipment on other vehicles.

Mr. Carmichael

The results of a series of experiments carried out by the Road Research Laboratory showed that flexible mud-flaps were not effective on private cars and that even rigid mud-flaps behind the rearwheels were of little benefit on cars travelling at speed. Much spray is thrown out sideways and then drawn back into the area of reduced air pressure behind the vehicle, and mud-flaps will not prevent this.
