HC Deb 04 December 1967 vol 755 cc234-5W
Mr. Whitaker

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will take steps by legislation or otherwise to review the categories of disqualification from membership of the House of Commons, particularly with a view to allowing clergymen to be Members.

Mr. Callaghan

This Question was considered in 1953 and 1956 by Select Committees, who recommended no change in respect of the disqualification of the clergy. The matter does not appear to call for reconsideration unless there is a substantial change of view among hon. Members.
