§ Mr. Wallaceasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he proposes to take to remedy the 322W position arising in London, East Anglia and South-East England, where women aged 17 years or over have to be accommodated in Holloway Prison owing to the complete lack of female remand centre facilities in these areas.
§ Mr. Roy JenkinsThe remand centre at Holloway for girls aged 17 but under 21 is now being brought into use. It is in the remodelled hospital, and is entirely separate from the rest of the prison. Adult women on remand at Holloway Prison are kept separately from convicted prisoners.
I am considering whether more satisfactory arrangements can be made for remand accommodation for women and girls in the south-east, but I have to bear in mind the very heavy increase in the male prison population.
