§ 73. Mr. Rankinasked the President of the Board of Trade if he has now considered the report of the conference on aircraft noise caused by civil aircraft; why military aircraft are exempted from its conclusions; whether he is satisfied that greater speed can be achieved without increasing engine power and the selling cost of the aircraft; and if he will make a statement.

§ Mr. J. P. W. MallalieuThe answers are:
Her Majesty's Government endorse the conclusions of the conference and the proposals for further action. In this connection I would refer my hon. Friend to my reply to the Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Putney (Mr. Hugh Jenkins) on 17th April.—[Vol. 745, c. 24.]
- (a) Yes.
- (b) The conference was concerned only with noise from civil aircraft. Different factors determine the extent to which reduction of noise from military aircraft is practicable.
- (c) There are many factors involved in the design and costing of future aircraft and it is difficult to generalise about this.
