§ 12. Mr. Biffenasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the estimated public expenditure on grants for university and other full-time further education during the financial years 1957–58, 1962–63, 1966–67 and 1967–68.
§ Mr. Crosland, pursuant to his Answer [OFFICIAL REPORT, 20th April, 1967; Vol. 745, c. 784], circulated the following:

1. The figures are not at constant prices.
2. The figures in Col. (1) comprise awards to full-time university and further education students 182W from England and Wales made by the Education Departments and local education authorities. They exclude other awards to university students from public funds (e.g. by other Government Departments, the Research Councils) and by the nationalised industries, for which full information for the relevant years is not available. In 1964–65 the cost of these awards is estimated at about £8m.
3. The figures in Col. (2) comprise Exchequer and local authority grants to universities in Great Britain and Exchequer and local authority expenditure on further education establishments in England and Wales, in respect of both capital and recurrent expenditure.
4. Both full-time and part-time students are included but expenditure on the two categories cannot be separately identified.
5. Expenditure on colleges of education and awards to students at these institutions and at university departments of education are not included.
