HC Deb 21 April 1967 vol 745 cc179-81W
Mrs. Lena Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many mothers of children of school age or below are at present serving prison sentences; how many children are involved; and what is the cost to public funds of caring for these children.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The table below analyses the information obtained from hospitals in England and Wales relating to the 2,302 persons who received hospital treatment for injuries caused by fireworks during this period. Figures are also given for the comparable four-week periods in 1965, 1964, 1963, and 1962 when the total numbers of persons involved were 2,339, 2,220, 2,461 and 2,832 respectively.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

I regret that this information is not available. The only relevant information I have is that on 1st March, 1967, information at the prisons showed that 377 women serving prison sentences in England and Wales were the mothers of 1,134 children; and that during the 12 months ended 31st March, 1966, 809 children came into care in England and Wales because a parent or guardian had been in prison or remanded in custody.
