Mr. Bob Brownasked the Minister of Labour what steps he is taking to provide alternative employment for employees of Vickers Limited who will lose their livelihood as a result of the non-acceptance of a tender by the firm for the manufacture of Chieftain tanks for the Ministry of Defence.
§ Mr. FernyhoughIt is by no means certain that any significant number of workers will lose their employment at Vickers because of the loss of this contract, therefore the question of provision of alternative employment does not immediately arise. We are however closely watching developments and my officers will give all practicable help if the need arises.
