HC Deb 17 April 1967 vol 745 c11W
Mr. Fisher

asked the Minister of Health how much money is spent annually by the National Health Service on new medical research; and what proportion of the National Health Service budget this represents.

Mr. K. Robinson

The amounts I am providing for new and continuing medical research are rising each year; the estimated expenditure is about£1.1 million for 1966–67 and£1.7 million for 1967–68 and these amounts represent 0.1 per cent. and 0.13 per cent. respectively of the National Health Service budgets for England and Wales. The main responsibility for allocating funds for medical research lies with the Medical Research Council.
