Mr. Henig

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what percentage of the United Kingdom's gross national product was spent on social security in each of years 1958 to 1966; and whether he has available comparable figures for each of the Common Market countries.

The table below shows expenditure on social security in the United Kingdom as a percentage of the gross national product at factor cost. The total covers national insurance benefits, supplementary pensions and assistance, war pensions and family allowances, the National Health Service, child welfare and school meals and milk but excludes expenditure on education.
