§ 80. Mr. Wolrige-Gordonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is satisfied with the current building programme of teacher training colleges; and what estimate he has made of the shortage of teachers by 1970–71, when the school-leaving age is to be raised.
§ Mr. RossThe current building programme is designed to enable the colleges of education to meet the expected demand for places.
As regards the second part of the Question, it is impossible to make a close estimate, but the number of qualified teachers in primary and secondary schools is expected to rise to about 44,600 by 1970–71. This would be about 6,400 short of requirements as at present forecast.
